New single Make It on Your Own

I love writing songs. It’s honestly what I’d rather do more than anything else. But sometimes it just really won’t come together. That was the case with ‘Make It on Your Own’. I’d been trying to write this song for my daughter Lizzy for two years. After she was born, everyone asked “Oh, I bet you’ve already written a song for her, haven’t you?” I’d tell them I was working on it. The truth was it just wasn’t working. Every set of words I put on paper didn’t feel genuine. So I decided to leave it alone until the right moment came. Then suddenly it was late December and I had an inspiration: what do I actually want to give her, and what can I? In the end I came to the conclusion that I can mainly just be there for her, love her, and then hope that’s enough. Eventually, when I’m no longer around, she’ll choose her own path. Make It on Your Own was born. I recorded it in my studio, and late that evening I decided to go live on Facebook (watch it back here: https://www.facebook.com/edstruijlaartofficial/videos/10156700938686808/). I played the song in its entirety for the viewers and the reactions were overwhelming. So at that point I decided to release it. For the first time on my own label, completely self-released. That’s extra nerve-wracking, I can tell you. It’s already on the Radio 1 and Radio 5 playlists, and many DJs on Radio 2 are already playing it as their personal choice. You can help me enormously by requesting the song from your favourite DJ at your favourite station.

Make It on Your Own is now on Spotify, YouTube and iTunes (Apple Music).

Add it to your own playlist and share it on your social media if you like it. The artwork was made by my partner Vanessa Hofstra. She works for herself under the name Favorite Design. If you’re interested, check her out!
