☕ Good morning Netherlands and hello John Mayer

This morning I was on Goedemorgen Nederland (Good Morning Netherlands, a national breakfast TV show), along with Henri Bontenbal from the CDA and Splinter Chabot. The broadcast was presented by Fidan Ekiz and Sam Hagens.

I got to talk about my theater show Gitaarmannen 3: John Mayer (Guitar Heroes 3: John Mayer), but it started at the beginning: how I discovered the guitar.

I was eight years old when I saw Eric Clapton on TV. I didn’t think: “that man plays well.” I thought: “I want a beard like that too.” From that moment on I wanted to play guitar.

During the broadcast I played a bit of Wonderful Tonight by Clapton and showed what connects Clapton, John Mayer and Robert Johnson: the song Crossroads. In that song you can really hear the entire history of the guitar, from the old blues to modern pop.

I also explained why John Mayer is such an incredibly good guitarist. He has big hands, plays bass notes with his thumb, and combines technique with feeling in a way that almost nobody can.

I added my own piece with a fragment of Neon and then a section of Slow Dancing in a Burning Room. And then it was already over.

The reactions were incredible. Since then ticket sales have exploded. Several venues on my tour are already nearly sold out. It’s unbelievable to see how many people are moved by that music and by the guitar.

What I also mentioned in the broadcast: through John Mayer’s album Continuum, the guitar solo was allowed back in. At a time when it had almost become old-fashioned, Mayer made it acceptable again. He showed that the guitar still has something to say. That’s a feeling I carry with me throughout the show.

After a sold-out first run, the show is returning to theaters. Together with my band I play the most beautiful songs by John Mayer and tell the stories behind the music.

From Gravity to Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, from Stop This Train to Neon. A tribute to the music, the guitar and the man who made it all cool again.

Ticket sales are flying. Want to be there?
